Interoperability is a key part of the use of information technologies in reducing the operational cost of government services. It is the focus of a conference organised by the Association for the Promotion and Development of Information Society (Apdsi) in Lisbon, Portugal on 22 March.

The conference organisers emphasise interoperability and the design of IT architectures to allow governments, citizens and enterprises to share and reuse data and information. This accelerates decision-making and increases openness, they write in the introduction to the programme.

The conference will take place at the New University of Lisbon.

Speakers include Margarida Abecasis, Head of Unit at DG DIGIT. She will present the European Commission's ISA programme (Interoperability Solutions for European Public Administrations).

Other experts will address interoperability across all sectors of Portugal's government, with presentations by for instance Portugal's Agency for the Modernisation of Administration (AMA), the Institute of Registries and Notaries (IRN), the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Economy and Employment. Topics include interoperability in Health Care, IT in courts of justice, and sharing economic and geographic data.
